I Can’t Lift My Baby!

My son is almost one! And more than twice the weight he was when he was born.

When friends pick him up they say ‘oh he’s getting heavy!’ but his dad and I don’t notice because we pick him up every day.

This is a perfect example of progressive overload.

I pick my son up every day (multiple times!) and every day day he weighs a tiny bit more than he did before, which means the change is so gradual I don’t notice him getting any heavier and it never becomes a problem.

This is why parents never say ‘I can’t lift my baby!’ because as the baby grows so does their strength and ability to carry them.

In order for you to notice any real change from lifting weights you need to be squatting at least your body weight for a sustained period of time. Like Charlotte did, remember Charlotte?

However, if I said to you on day one, squat this bar with 60KG on it, you would run a mile and I would be out of business!

But just as you will never hear a parent say ‘my baby is too heavy!’, you will never hear my clients say ‘I can’t lift this weight!’ because we use something called progressive overload.

Just like my son grows a little bit every day, every session we add a little bit of weight to the bar. This could be anything between 1KG and 5KG depending on your size, strength, age and ability.

Your body adapts to this little bit of weight and your strength increases.

So at the next session we can add a little bit more. And a little bit more.

Before you know it, you’re squatting 60KG and wondering what all the fuss was about!

Of course we can’t just keep adding weight to the bar for eternity. If that was the case we would all be able to lift houses.

Eventually, you will reach your beginners peak and at that point I adjust your programme to start putting all that strength you’ve gained to work for you.

Your body composition changes.

Your posture improves-

You look and feel better than you have in a long time.

And that’s just for starters.

My online coaching follows exactly the same principles as my in-person coaching and gets the same results when followed correctly.
