Don’t Try To Walk Before You Can Crawl

My little boy wants to walk before he can crawl.

He’s learned the commando style army crawl and can shuffle around on the floor (with a little encouragement), but his new favourite thing is holding onto the sofa and pulling himself up to a standing position.

Yesterday I looked up and he was getting ready to take a step! Needless to say he landed in a heap on the floor because he’s not ready!

Crawling is an important part of a babies development in terms of spacial awareness. It’s also when they learn about danger. That they can’t just throw themselves off the edge of something because there’s a drop there and they will fall.

So when we say ‘don’t try to walk before you can crawl’ there’s a very good reason for that.

But this is exactly what most people in commercial gyms are doing.

Instead of starting at the beginning, they copy something they’ve seen on You Tube or Instagram, or take advice from someone in the gym whose already got the shape they want.

The problem is the person they’re copying has been training for a long time and already exhausted all of their beginner gains. They’re already strong and really anything they do will maintain what they’ve already achieved.

Then the average Jo tries to do what they’re doing and it doesn’t work for them.

Strength training is about firstly getting strong and then using that strength to move heavy weights, which in turns improves your body composition (and long term health).

But people don’t want to get strong first, they want to do all the fun looking stuff they see on the internet.

Who wants to crawl when walking is so much more fun?

In my ladies only group sessions we get strong first.

Then we put that strength to good use.

Beginner crawlers welcome.
