5 Steps to Staying Motivated

Staying motivated is what divides the dreamers and the doers.

Because we all have dreams and goals and things we would like to achieve in life. But actually making them happen takes time and effort, and usually requires us to step outside of our comfort zone.

And there is always an easier option to take.

It’s easier to stay in your job than find a new one, even if you’re unhappy.

It’s easier to stay in an unsatisfactory relationship than try to find a new one.

And it’s easier to stay home after a long day at work than get yourself to the gym on a cold, dark night.

But those who choose to take the easier option are selling themselves short.

Short of the life they could be living if only they had that extra bit of motivation to help them stay focused and committed to making it happen.

So here are my top 5 tips to staying motivated, both in life and in the gym, to keep you on track to reaching your goals.

Get some accountability.

Who cares if you don’t go to the gym?

If the answer is ‘no one but me’ then you’re much less likely to go when you don’t feel like it.

We all have an endless number of “reasons” why it’s not convenient right now. Having a training partner, or someone who will notice if you don’t turn up, someone who shares your goals, wants you to succeed and will be disappointed if you miss a day, can make all the difference between going and not going.

Follow a Programme

It’s much easier to find the motivation to do something when you know exactly what you have to do to get there. Turning up at the gym and looking around for things to do isn’t going to help you reach your goals, or provide you with much motivation. Having a programme all mapped out that can take you from A to B, with a clear goal defined and everything in between planned out, is much more motivating than hoping for the best.

Make an investment.

Free things are desirable, but they hold no value and therefore require no commitment. If something is free it doesn’t matter if you lose it. It’s much harder to skip the gym if you’re going to lose something tangible by not going.

Plan ahead

Meal prepping ahead of time.
Taking your gym clothes to work with you so you don’t have to go home first.
Putting your gym sessions in your diary and making them non negotiable.

Are all little things you can do to make the decision to go much easier.

But the number one motivator for every person who has ever been a success at anything is:

Remember your WHY.

Why are you doing this?
What do you want to achieve?
Why is it important that you do?
How will you feel when you achieve it?

Think about these four questions.

When you have your answers, write them down, put them somewhere visible and look at them every day to remind yourself why you’re doing it.

So many people pass through life, never really being totally happy with their lot. Wishing they were a bit thinner/curvier/fitter/stronger/healthier but never actually doing anything about it.

Don’t be one of them.

Success is sacrificing what you want NOW for what you want the MOST.

Happy Motivation Monday!

Always with love,
